High-poly vs low-poly models: what is the difference?
If you are commissioning 3D work, you will hear the terms high-poly and low-poly. They describe how many polygons make up a model, and the right choice depends on where the model will be used.
A high-poly model has a dense mesh that can capture fine detail such as anatomy, skin texture and small surface features. It is the right choice for detailed sculpts, close-up renders, showcase pieces and 3D printing.
A low-poly model uses far fewer polygons so it can run smoothly in real time, for example inside a game engine. Much of its apparent detail comes from textures rather than geometry.
Many characters need both. A detailed high-poly sculpt is created first, and its detail is then transferred onto a lighter low-poly version that is ready for real-time use.
Not sure which one your project needs? Tell us where the model will be used and we will help you choose.
