From a 2D concept to a 3D character: how a commission works

Turning a flat sketch into a character that can live in a game, a film or a visualisation is a step-by-step process. Here is how a 3D character commission typically moves from first idea to finished model.

1. The brief. Everything starts with your idea: reference images, a concept sketch and notes on how the character will be used. The clearer the brief, the fewer revisions you will need later.

2. Concept review. Before modelling begins, the concept is checked for proportions, silhouette and details that must be solved in 3D, such as the back view that a 2D drawing never showed.

3. Blockout and sculpt. A rough 3D form is built first to lock in proportions. From there the character is sculpted in detail, adding anatomy, surface detail and personality.

4. Cleanup and texturing. The sculpt is prepared for its final use and given colour, materials and fine surface detail so it reads correctly under light.

5. Review and delivery. You review the model, ask for changes, and receive the final files in the format your project needs.
